Sus exitos mas populares son Flamingo y Harlem Nocturne. Él fue una gran influencia en John Coltrane. Hizo su primera grabación con Lionel Hampton en octubre de 1939, con Charlie Christian, Clyde Hart y Gran Sid Catlett.
Formó su propia banda en 1945 e hizo las primeras grabaciones bajo su propio nombre para el sello Majestic.
